It happens so often — you refresh one part of your living space, and suddenly everything else looks shabby! When it happened to these homeowners, they called in the services of Rue Group, Inc. The home had been remodeled to include many things the family dreamed about, but the work then revealed that their outdoor spaces “came up short.” With gorgeous views of both the golf course and even the ocean on clear days, the back yard had a lot of pluses — but heat from full sun on a concrete patio made it almost unusable. Initially, the plan was for a shaded back yard employing the existing patio; however, as time went on, removing the patio became a better solution, allowing both the designers and homeowners to reimagine the space from scratch.
Today, that back yard is a huge attraction; the family often has lunch and watches golfers at the same time! Low stone walls separate individual “rooms” outdoors, while allowing for an easy flow between them. An extended entertainment space, sheltered by a vine-covered pergola, holds a stone sofa and cushy chairs that invite gathering around the fire pit. Neat drought-resistant plantings are everywhere, gracing alcoves and cozy corners; one nook holds a mural that echoes the actual view. Rosemary, climbing wisteria, and a host of perennials bring color and fragrance to a formerly unsightly slope behind the house; a graceful fountain is visually cooling. Abundant shade now creates a home that’s now equally inviting both indoors and out.
